Patterns
Ink & Pencil on Paper. 2017. 76x56cm
Patterns series is an attempt to introduce a different form from the usual in the applicable religious designs. The inspiration for these works came from a mosque in Toronto, downtown area.
Designers, architects, and even calligraphers and vocal artists used to associate geometric and floral motifs in places that denote Islamic concepts. However, the mosque does not contain a minaret, a dome, or any usual external architectural signs that make us differentiate the mosque from other buildings other than a sign above the door and some geometric shapes on the windows. This group of works tends to break most of the rules consistent in the manufacture of Islamic decorations, including symmetry and repetition. I wanted to enhance the value of difference, flexibility, and tolerance. So, you can see that the decorations do not depend on repetition in their general form nor on symmetry. Also, I intended to add abstractive elements inspired by human shape to approach and reflect spirituality through the body.
